Community Meeting Spaces and Theatre
The Project
The Vancouver Public Library's Central Branch is an icon of the Vancouver skyline. In 2018 the top two floors were renovated to create new community space. The VPL sought to use the renovation to provide meeting and presentation space for patrons. The renovation added an 80-person theatre and meeting spaces to accommodate groups from 10 to 90 people.
The Challenge
Our challenge was to design spaces that were
- flexible for various uses
- simple to operate and
- durable for daily public use.
The library's goal was to create space for civic dialogue and generate rental income. How could technology systems help achieve this?
The Result
The theatre was equipped with an integrated camera system to allow webcasting of events held in the space. Separate multi-purpose rooms are linked to create overflow spaces. Patrons can watch theatre events streamed live on 70" displays on the floor above.
The feature meeting room can be combined into one large system to accommodate 90 people, or divided up with an operable wall. The AV system reconfigures to allow smaller separate events when the wall is up.
Another highlight is the Poet's Corner — a unique, intimate space outfitted for public readings with a stunning panoramic view of the city.
A simple keypad control system allows user to get up and running quickly in each room.
After the renovation, the library can now provide space for civic dialogue, arts events and realize rental income from the spaces.
