City of Vancouver
“Weekend Chime” Public Artwork
The Project
Weekend Chime is a sound installation by Brady Cranfield located in the city’s new public plaza at Robson Square between the Provincial Court of British Columbia and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Every Friday at 5 pm, bright red speakers play two notes taken from the chorus of Loverboy’s iconic song “Working for the Weekend,” signalling the end of the traditional workweek.
The Result
Specialty audio equipment was selected and programmed to create and play the musical phrase each week. We modelled the acoustics and chose equipment to carefully control the sound dispersion in the centre of the city.
High-quality heavy-duty speaker assemblies and amplifiers will endure outdoor exposure for years. The mounting system was designed to prevent weather damage and corrosion from moisture.
The horns sit 10 meters above the plaza on a custom-designed lighting pole. Engineered mounting brackets and bright red enameled speakers make a striking presence.
