The Challenge
Camosun College needed to modernize its Health Sciences campus. The existing building technology systems were frustrating and hindered learning. The building did not support the high standards of Camosun education. Informed by new pedagogical approaches, Camosun looked to build learning spaces that promoted groupwork and collaboration between teachers and students. To address this, the campus needed a major re-think of traditional classrooms. Classroom technology had to facilitate this new approach and bring students together.
The Design
We designed systems that allowed flexible learning. Through the campus network, teaching material can be shared from any room to any other. Video and audio can be sent across the network and appear in any other classroom. It can also be streamed online or recorded for later viewing. For example, an instructor can give a demonstration from a lab which can be streamed live to a full classroom. Students in that classroom can give live feedback to the instructor.
A particular highlight is the simulation labs. These labs simulate hospital and residential settings. Microphones, cameras and speakers are installed which allow students to practice different care scenarios. An instructor guides them from an audio-video enabled control room next door where they communicate and control simulation equipment.
The Result
